Falles de Vilaller (Burning Torches) - Alta Ribagorça
The Descent of the “Falles” at Vilaller always takes place on 23rd June from 10.30 pm onwards!

Carrying the “falles” (burning torches) down the mountain is one of the most unique popular festivals of Vilaller. Each participant lights their “falla” at the bonfire and begins the route guided by the “fadrí”, or group leader, with the “falles” in flames, creating rivers of fire running down the mountain and finally reaching the village square. The party ends with dancing and carol singing around a large bonfire.

In times past, it was believed that evil spirits, which emerged at midnight, would flee when they saw the fire and bonfires. These rites were performed by men to thank their gods for successful harvests and the arrival of good weather. Today, these beliefs are still valid, but festive and fun aspects have also been incorporated, including gatherings of neighbours and, of course, touristic and cultural events.

Don’t miss it!
